Carli Susu
VR Artist - AKA Virtually Susu (susu_vrartist)
I'm a UK based VR / AR / XR artist currently living in the South Coast bohemian town of Brighton, a very creative place to live, but I am also a passionate world traveller.
I trained at the prestigious Central-St Martin's School of Art in London, graduating with a degree in Theatre Design.
For many years, I channelled my creativity into running my own 'faery' clothing company, trading at major music festivals in the UK and around the world. Each new event was another opportunity to build my own little world using my market stall as a sort of 'stage'.
My fascination with Virtual Reality, and particularly VR art was probably unknowingly triggered as a very small child when I was taken to see Mary Poppins. I was completely mesmerised by the scene where the characters 'jump' into a sidewalk chalk painting, and I always felt how cool it would be to be able to walk around my own art.
Then, of course, there was the film, Avatar. The concept of taking on another body and exploring alien landscapes really appealed.
Several years ago I went to two art exhibitions, one at the Saatchi Gallery in London, which featured VR installations. I tried on a VR headset for the first time, and that was that; I was hooked.
The pandemic was a weird kind of blessing for me, gifting me with the time to explore. I painted everyday and became obsessed.
I love the concept of literally walking in another person's shoes, seeing the world through another's eyes. It creates a degree of empathy that I have yet to experience with any other medium.
I love to create enormous worlds, places of beauty where one can just hang out and enjoy the colours, sounds and sensations. Much of my work is nature themed, and as a counterpoint, I also create enormous metropolises, and am learning to create and animate the creatures that inhabit these spaces.
I am also into mixing art forms and am currently exploring the idea of VR and Ecstatic dance, dancing with light.
I honestly don't know where this VR Art journey will lead me, but my first launch of a series of animated GIFS from one of my worlds was a great success, gaining much attention for such a newbie as I (and even a few sales, as artists have to eat, too!)
I have a very lively YouTube channel where I present videos of my work and also am producing a series of tutorials showing the process of my work. tricks of the trade, if you like. I like to think that I am very friendly and approachable, and am always happy to chat about VR art with friends and fans.
